I’m going to Denver tomorrow and I’m super excited about it. Mark and I are going to see two of our favorite bands play — Dispatch and Guster at Red Rocks and spend some quality time together in the mountains. His crazy busy season at work is finally over and I can’t wait to just chill for the weekend. Before IÂ take the next 3 days off, I wanted to discuss a few things!
Why IÂ Drink Beer
Lately I’ve been feeling more like a 20 year old than I ever have. I’ve been staying up later and drinking more BEER than ever (probs like 3 or 4 nights a week). Guess what? IT IS OKAY. Back in 2010/2011 when I was mid-eating disorder, I was mortified to have a single drink or stay up late because it “wasn’t healthy.” I thought alcohol (especially beer) made you fat and I wasn’t going waste my calories on that (because I counted them all). Today my mindset has completely shifted and after years of telling myself I didn’t like beer when I was really just afraid to drink it, I finally LOVE it and want to tell the entire world about it.
After years of restriction and being “overly” healthy, I am finally in a place to understand ALL food and drink are okay and guess what? I like beer. I like the way it tastes. I prefer a beer buzz over a wine/hard alcohol buzz. And I don’t give a shit how many calories is in it! If you truly live a healthy lifestyle then nothing should be off limits no matter how many calories is in it or how many grams of sugar it contains. 1 beer, 2 beers, or even 3 beers is not going to make you gain weight when you’re eating healthy most of the time and most importantly, you should not feel an ounce of shame drinking it!
What’s helped me come to this realization is surrounding myself with normal eaters and drinkers. AKA my entire family, friends, and MARK love beer so it wasn’t hard to convince me that I actually enjoy it too. I also love the micro brew atmosphere. The bar scene was never for me, but breweries have a completely different vibe and it’s totally me. I’d say I’m still new to beer drinking, but my palate is definitely expanding. I love wheats, sours, saisons, kolsches, and kirshes. I’m still figuring out the whole hoppy, dark beer thing, but I’m loving my journey so far. I have a post coming up on FFF sharing some of my favorite breweries in the Twin Cities, so be on the lookout for that if you live in Minneapolis. Thanks for listening.

We’re Hiring!
I continue to have the conversation over and over again about the fact that your degree doesn’t matter (in a lot of cases) and that what does, is your experiences. This is why Fit Foodie Finds is hiring an intern this fall (and likely every fall) so that we can give someone the experience of running a small business, being a content creator, and more!
All of the information about the internship can be found HERE. But long story short…The Fit Foodie internship is happening this Fall from September-December. It is 15ish hours/week (5 hours in office with Team Fit Foodie) and PAID.
This candidate would ideally have a background in one of the following: communications, journalism, design, and/or business and is a motivated and energetic person who is ready to take initiative on many different Fit Foodie Finds projects. Criteria:
- Journalism, communications, design, or business background preferred
- Located in Minneapolis/St.Paul — able to be in office one day per week.
- Open-minded and flexible to the start-up way of business.
Like I said, click HERE to find out more information about length, compensation, etc! Deadline for consideration: July 31st.
Have a great weekend, friends!
YAY BEER! I don’t love it a ton, but there are some out there that I like and doesn’t it feel so great not to feel bad about food and living?!
Also, just wanted to say congrats on hiring an intern! That is so great you are able to do that! Super inspiring <3
Red Rocks is so amazing for concerts! You are going to have a blast! I had the same issues with alcohol or any beverage that has calories and to be honest even in recovery they still freak me out and I avoid them. Some days I miss drinking (mostly in social situations) but I was warned that I should refrain from drinking for awhile because eating disorders and alcohol/substance abuse issues tend to be co-occuring
I totally relate to this!! I just started LOVING beer over this past year, after claiming I hated it throughout college and my early 20s (I’m’ 26 now!). I always associated it with “unhealthy” and “fattening”, and honestly never gave it a chance. Same with fun cocktails…I used to shame margaritas because of the sugar but now I will happily enjoy a marg whenever I please. Oh, and MN breweries are the best 🙂
HIRE ME
Yes to beer!! Always and forever 🙂
OMG…I love beer and I love FFF! Working with you & your peeps would be my DREAM JOB!
I definitely love the brewery/taproom scene as well! I love dark beer but still haven’t able to fully appreciate hoppy beers! 🙂
I wanted to say that I think it’s awesome that you are bringing an intern on next fall. It takes a lot of extra work on your end but the interns will be forever grateful for the experience. Happy concerting! 🙂
I love Guster and Dispatch. Have a great time at the show!
The “get it here now” link goes to a yummy-looking popsicle post, not the e-book. Just FYI 🙂 love me some craft beer! If you’re ever in Atlanta, we have a TON of amazing breweries!
Thank you for being so open and transparent about who you are and how you live your life!! Love this post! #realtalk
Have the best time in Denver, your next Colorado trip should include Fort Collins up north, it has a great Brewery scene and the cutest downtown in all the land!!!
P.S. Really wish I lived closer to St.Paul so I could hangout with you and Ms. Linley!!!! xoxoxox
I do need to spend time in Fort Collins! Every time I go to CO it’s to the Denver area.
Love me some Guster!!! Enjoy Denver!
YAS!!!!!
This is an awesome post! I love craft beer so much! A few Denver brewery recommendations- Great Divide (location downtown), Blue Moon (RiNo), Crooked Stave (in the Source, sours only). Boulder- Avery (best food ever!) and Sanitas (great patio!) and if you are fort collins- Odell and New Belgium (the tour is the best if you can get in for one! they sell out in advance but have lots of cancellations!)
Enjoy Denver!!

Love your recs, thank you!!!! What about anything closer to Idaho Springs?!
Tommyknocker in Idaho springs! And have a drink at Bread Bar, very cool place : breadbarsp.com. And check out Rayback Collective in Boulder. The great thing about Colorado is local craft beer on tap anywhere you go!
I hope Steel Toe is on your brewery list!! It’s my favorite, and no one seems to know about it. But their Provider Ale and Size 4 are both delicious if you like the lighter side, and their Size 7 is one of my top 3 fav IPAs ever. If you haven’t been there you need to check it out!
Oh me geeee! I was just there lat night. It’s like right next to Switch, where I workout! + Switch is now partnering with ST on Wednesday nights 🙂 Workout + free beer!
YAS to Steel Toe! Try their Sommer Vice (Hefeweizen/Wheat Beer). It is my all time favorite beer– ever!
Craft beer chicks unite! I went from being a total non-beer drinker to a bonafide beer snob in a few short years thanks to my now husband. This was so refreshing to read because I often struggle with my fitness/nutrition goals and my love for craft beer. Visiting breweries all over the world has become a favorite pastime (no, a passion!) of my husband and I. I’m a chemist and I also love to cook so I truly appreciate the science, complexity, depth, and variety of craft brewing. There is always something new happening! I even use the spent grain from my husband’s garage brewing endeavors to create some interesting clean eats. Check out my spent grain granola at http://salutami.com/2017/04/18/no-grain-left-behind/. We’re going to Denver later this year for the first time and I can’t even fit all the breweries in our agenda…#nograinleftbehind
Love!!!
I LOVE BEER TOOOOOOO! But I have to usually opt for a gluten free beer – which isn’t nearly as good but then I’m not paying for it later (psoriasis). Love you and love seeing all your growth! SO inspiring 😉
Have you tried Omission?! It’s yummy!
OMG!!!! I thank you for this post. I LOVE BEER!!! I only drink it on the weekends and I feel guilty about EVERY SINGLE ONE!! I think “if I am going to have a drink, I should have a vodka and water.” And the whole time I’m thinking how much I would rather have a beer!!!!!
This is me to a T too!!!
Thank you for this post, Lee! x

Yeahh beer! I did 2 Whole 30s and determined beer makes me real bloated and even 1 or 2 gives me a headache the next day (I write as I’m at work with a headache….). But I still drink craft beer because it’s delicious and totally worth it for me #foodfreedom
Oh no that’s a bummer (the headache part)! I don’t really ever get hangovers or headaches, so I think I’m just lucky!
Oh my gosh! No hangovers? I need to be you 😉 But seriously, you are only lucky girl! Even just a couple beers does me in. But I still love ’em, and in the twin cities, we have some of the best breweries! So, beer must be drank.
My boyfriend is SO into beer — I’m not talking crappy keystone light the frat boys drank in college but quality beer from sought after breweries. I’m not a huge beer drinker (he’s into IPAs and I don’t always love the hoppy taste) but I can so see the appreciation for it and love the brewery scene so much more than the bar scene too. It’s not about getting wasted but appreciating what you’re drinking, and I so prefer that.
I drink like an IPA a month…really trying to acquire that taste 😛
Thank you for your post!! You are so right about having a beer and not feeling bad about it. Thank you for being real! That’s what I love about your website and posts. I really appreciate your perspective! Thank you!! And by the way – my family is heading to Denver too this weekend! Love Comorado!!
<3 Thank you for commenting! Maybe I'll see you in sunny Colorado :D
I love the Twin Cities beer scene! I love about 30 minutes northwest of Minneapolis and we have one little brewery in town that is amazing. I can’t wait for your post on your favorite places to check out in the cities. Have fun in Denver!
What brewery is it?!
Lupulin Brewery in Big Lake. Tiny little town, brewery in the strip mall (ah, Minnesota!) but seriously amazing beer. We go at least once a week!
Yassssss. Classy Minnesota 🙂
