I love when social media trends actually SLAY — like these 2-ingredient air fryer bagels! We have been making these on repeat and have even come out with more variations like pumpkin bagel bites.

So the gist of this recipe is that you only need 2 ingredients to make a bagel with 9g protein/serving. There is no rising or boiling involved, just kneading and air frying!

What You Need for Protein Bagels

It’s truly wild that all you really need to make these protein bagels is flour and yogurt. WHAT??

  • Self-rising flour – we chose a self-rising flour because then you don’t to add a levener.
  • Plain Skyr yogurt or Greek yogurt – we tested this with both Skyr yogurt and Greek yougrt and they both work great. Skyr is higher in protein and our favorite brand is Painterland Sisters.
  • Egg – this is for an egg wash before air frying. It’ll help make the tops crispy and golden brown.

In addition to the above ingredients, you’ll also need an air fryer, parchment paper, and a brush for the egg wash.

don’t have self-rising flour?

Use all purpose flour and baking powder. You’ll need 1.5 teaspoons baking powder per 1 cup of flour.

Six bowls containing various ingredients and one egg on a textured surface. The bowls hold sesame seeds, a spice blend, flour, a creamy substance, and salt.

Protein Bagel Variations

  • Strawberry: we tested a fruit-filled variation! add ½ cup chopped strawberries and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the dough.
  • Bagel bites: instead of rolling your dough into a classic bagel shape — try making bagel bites! This recipe should get you around 12 bagel bites. Air fry them at 350ºF for 8-10 minutes.

What can I use instead of Skyr-style yogurt?

Feel free to use classic Greek yogurt. We always recommend using a higher-fat yogurt like 2% or 5%.

Two bagels with seasoning on top are being cooked on parchment paper inside an air fryer.

Serving Ideas

Feel free to keep things super basic with just cream cheese (we’re whipped people). My favorite way to eat these is as a breakfast sandwich! Slice it in half and add egg, breakfast sausage, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, and arugula.

Other Ideas

  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Butter
Two bagels topped with sesame and poppy seeds are baking on parchment paper inside an air fryer basket.

How long do air fryer protein bagels last?

We recommend storing the bagels in the fridge for up to 2 days. Just make sure to let them cool completely before transferring them into an airtight container and refrigerating. We also recommend cutting them right before you’re ready to eat.

How to Freeze

these freeze and reheat REALLY well. Let them cool completely. Then, wrap them tightly in tin foil and freeze for up to 3 months.

How to reheat: air fry at 400ºF for 1-2 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Skyr yogurt*
  • 1 cup self-rising flour*, or 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 large egg, whisked

Optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 350℉.
  • Place the yogurt, flour, and sea salt into a large bowl. Using a silicon or wooden spoon, stir until combined. Then, using your hands press together until a ball has formed.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured work surface. Knead together until smooth. You may need to sprinkle more flour over the top so that it is not super sticky.
  • Divide the ball into 4 equal pieces. Roll into a ball and press lightly to flatten. Use the end of a rounded spoon or your finger to poke a hole into the center of the flattened dough. Stretch the middle slightly so the hole does not close when air frying.
  • Brush each bagel on the top and bottom with the egg wash and top with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning. Set aside.
  • Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper and place the bagels in, seed side down. You may need to do this in 2 batches.
  • Air fry for 8 minutes, then flip the bagels and cook for an additional 8 minutes.
  • Remove from the air fryer and allow the bagels to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Serve with your favorite bagel toppings.

Tips & Notes

  • We used Skyr yogurt (Painterland Sisters is our favorite!) because it’s naturally super high in protein. However, we are confident that any full-fat Greek yogurt will work, too.
  • If you do not have self-rising flour, you can use 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 1.5 teaspoons of baking powder.
  • We also tested this recipe with a ½ cup frozen chopped strawberries and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar for a sweeter bagel. You can add this in at the end of step 2 before you transfer the dough to the floured work surface.

We haven’t tested it, but let us know if it works! You might need to increase the flour amount if the dough is too sticky. If it’s a thicker-style dairy free yogurt, we think it should work ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Lori, When this happens, we recommend adding additional flour 1 teaspoon at a time until the dough isn’t sticky, and can be easily kneaded. Let us know if that helps!
