Long Live Kombucha

I just can’t get enough kombucha. When I was teaching at Corepower (years ago now) there was a Whole Foods literally in the same parking lot as Corepower Yoga Edina. That Whole Foods introduced me to kombucha.

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a beverage produced by fermenting tea with a culture of bacteria and yeast. It’s made from sugar, tea, and SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast).  The final product is fizzy and slightly sweet.

What the what?

Yes, there are strains of live active cultures floating around in kombucha, but it is SO GOOD FOR YOU.

So that Arny Palmer I tasted- it makes so much sense! Fermented Tea + Lemonade…it’s basically a Kombucha Arny Palmer!

One of the main reasons that I drink kombucha is for the probiotic. I’ve met with nutritionists (both RD’s and holistic nutritionists) and they always recommend a probiotic. By drinking one of these a week, there really is no need for the probiotic.

Kombucha Lemonade in two cups and a pitcher

There are lots of different kombucha brands and flavors out there. I usually drink the brand Synergy because that’s what’s readily available in the Twin Cities.

If I am going for an already flavored variety- my favorite in the ginger. A single bottle of kombucha sells for about $3.99. The way I look at is is- a cappuccino or even a cup of coffee from Starbucks. There are 2 servings in each bottle, so they usually last me 2-3 days.

In today’s recipe, I used a bottle of plain kombucha. This flavor is tangy and fizzy…so I thought I would add some citrus and a little more sweetener for the perfect summer drink.

I also added some blueberries for some color ๐Ÿ˜€ Cuz- why not?!

I LOVE kombucha! I actually crave it now. My favorite is mango madness by synergy. What classes do you teach at corepower. I live/work right by that one and go there occasionally.

DUDE. I love kombucha. I went through a weird fermentation phase where I made my own. It was so matronly of me. For the record I just made a kombucha recipe…for kombucha sangria because OBVS there had to be alcohol in it #Ihaveaproblem

I have been curious about Kombucha for quite some time now! I really want to try it but as soon as I read the words ‘fermented’ on the bottle I tend to put it down. I’m not sure why it makes me feel so icky. After all, beer is fermented too, and some cheeses and… I guess I should just get over myself already and go for it ๐Ÿ˜‰ These pictures certainly helped! Looks positively thirst quenching.

Hey Lee, I just read a great book (I got it at the library) the amazon link is http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Book-Fermentation-Health-Probiotic/dp/158333503X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402432170&sr=1-1 and it really covered the whole fermentation process and had great recipes, including Kombucha. I highly recommend it. Love the SCOBY!

I’m going to try this! I’ve never had kombucha before. Is it caffeine free?

I just read this in the article you linked above.
“The sugar and caffeine is used all up in the fermentation process so donโ€™t worry, it has very little (if any) caffeine or sugar in the final product.”

We brew our own kombucha and we’ll definitely need to give this version a try! We loooove Arnold Palmers, so this will probably be my new go-to way to enjoy kombucha!

You can brew your own SCOBY and kombucha from plain kombucha. Iโ€™m brewing one right now.

I HEART kombucha in a major way — never had a plain flavor though…
