One of our all-time favorite healthy breakfast recipes is this Dark Chocolate Berry Baked Oatmeal. It’s sweetened naturally with banana and maple syrup and truly tastes like dessert for breakfast!
A Breakfast that Serves a Crowd
Whenever my family gets together for the holidays (or any time of year!) we love cooking together. I’m usually in charge of breakfast because I’m always the first one up.
You know what they say, the early bird catches the worm…or makes breakfast for the whole family! I’ve been making breakfast for my family since I was about 5 years old. I was the first one awake back then, too.
A meal to share is always my go-to for family breakfast affairs. If I can mix a whole bunch of things together, put it in a casserole dish, and into the oven, then I’m a happy camper. This baked oatmeal hits all of these things on the head!
What You Need
Simple ingredients, but a whole lot of flavor. Here’s what you need!
- rolled oats
- white whole wheat flour
- blackberries
- raspberries
- banana
- eggs
- chocolate chips
- maple syrup
- almond milk
Why We Love this Baked Oatmeal
I love that this recipe is all naturally sweetened with the mashed banana, maple syrup, and berries.
We did add a few dark chocolate chips, but chocolate doesn’t count, right? I also love that this is a year-round kind of breakfast! Now that we know berries are always in season, why not make this for all occasions?
Can you use frozen berries?
Frozen berries are a great alternative to fresh and you can 100% use them instead of fresh.
Can you use other berries?
Don’t have raspberries or blackberries? Use your favorite kind of berry! 2 cups of any kind of berry works.
- blueberries
- strawberries
- blackberries
- raspberries
Can you make this gluten-free?
To make this recipe gluten free, simply use gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of white whole wheat. Also, make sure to buy certified gluten-free rolled oats.
Can you freeze baked oatmeal?
To freeze this dark chocolate berry baked oatmeal, let it cool completely. Then tightly wrap it with a piece of tin foil and remove as much air as possible.
Freeze for up to 3 months.
Do you eat baked oatmeal hot or cold?
Most people eat baked oatmeal warm, but you can totally eat it cold on days 2, 3, and 4. I’ve personally done it and it’s great!
Storage Suggestions
Let baked oatmeal cool completely. Then, transfer it into an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3-5 days.

This is yummy! Easy to make and turned out perfectly. The wee pockets of melted chocolate take it to a whole other level. I made it with frozen mixed berries and it didn’t need any extra cooking time
Love, love loooove this bangin’ berry breakfast bake!
I am a dark chocoholic. But I can’t find any dark chocolate chips anywhere, much less mini dark chocolate chips. Pray tell where you get yours and what brand? ??
My favorite is Ghirardelli! I feel like they sell them everywhere in Minneapolis! You could always order on Amazon <3
Could we add protein powder to this?
Hi Nichole! While I haven’t tried that myself, I don’t see why not! I would start with one serving so that you don’t compromise the texture too much!
Wow looks yummy. Will surely try this. Thanks for sharing this post. Keep sharing. Thanks again.
Great idea thanks for sharing it!
This dish looks attractive, delicious and nutritious, it is good for human health. I would love to follow the instructions.
Can I make the night before and refrigerate and bake in morning?
Hi Shelley! I haven’t tried doing this. I’m worried the oats would get too soft, but you could try it anyways!
You could try pre-mixing the dry and wet ingredients in 2 separate bowls to save a little time – then combine in the morning and bake?
I made this with raspberries and blueberries and dark choc chunks – sooooo good! Do I really have to share?
I’m curious to try making this with a flax or chia egg instead too, maybe next time!
I made this yesterday – everyone loved it for Christmas morning! Thanks!
YAY! I am so glad your fam loved it <3
I made this – with blackberries and blueberries – and it’s so yummy! Thanks!
Milk chocolate-covered potato chips are WONDERFUL. And so is this oatmeal! Nothing better than dark chocolate and berries!
