Super moist and flavorful meatballs! These ground chicken meatballs have grated parm and shredded mozzarella rolled right up in ’em.

Amazing served as a main dish or appetizer! Serve these meatballs as a main dish over a bed of pasta or as a sammie on a hoagie. Or serve as an appetizer with toothpicks for spearing the meatballs and scooping up extra sauce.

Serve right in the skillet! These meatballs and the sauce are cooked right in the skillet, and are best served in the same dish since you’re broiling the cheese to golden brown perfection right before digging in.

Easy Swaps

  • Ground chicken –> Ground turkey, lean ground beef, or a plant-based ground
  • Homemade Italian seasoning –> Store-bought Italian seasoning

Storage Tips

Leftover meatballs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat in the oven or microwave or on the stovetop before serving.

You can also freeze the cooked meatballs for up to 3 months. Just thaw them in the refrigerator overnight and reheat before serving.

Serving Ideas

I love serving these chicken parm meatballs over a bed of spaghetti! Top it all off with additional fresh basil if you’re feeling fancy.

Want to skip the pasta? I recommend serving with roasted or steamed broccoli or your favorite veggie of choice.

Craving a sammie? Delish! Serve the meatballs and a little extra scoop of sauce on hoagies or slider buns.

Serving as an appetizer? Love it! I serve mine with toothpicks for the meatballs or with a basket of crostini.

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1 lb. ground chicken
  • 2.5 tablespoons olive oil, separated
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Sauce

  • ¼ cup dry red wine
  • ½ large yellow onion, diced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.5 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 15 oz. tomato sauce
  • 15 oz. diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Topping

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella
  • ½ cup panko bread crumbs
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  • Begin by preparing the meatballs. Add the ground chicken, 1 tablespoon olive oil, egg, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, and salt to a bowl. Gently combine the ingredients with a wooden spoon.
  • Scoop about 1.5 tablespoons of the meat mixture into your hands and form a ball in between your hands. Set on a plate. Repeat until all of the meatballs have been made, about 18.

  • Heat the remaining olive oil in a large skillet over medium/high heat. When the oil is hot, add the meatballs to the skillet and cook on all sides until brown. Do not cook the meatballs fully, this will happen later. Remove the meatballs from the skillet.
Cooked meatballs are arranged in a black cast iron skillet on a light textured surface.
  • Add the onion to the pan and season with a pinch of salt. Saute for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for an additional 2 minutes or when the garlic is fragrant.

  • Deglaze the same pan with the red wine. Scrape the brown bits from the bottom of the pan with a spatula.
  • Add the Italian seasoning, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and the remaining salt. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer.
