How to Make Steel Cut Oats in the Crockpot
If you’re wondering how to make crockpot steel cut oats, it’s EASY! Like, really easy.Step 1: Spray Crockpot
Give your crockpot a nice spray down (or rub down) with nonstick cooking spray! This will prevent any major stickage. You can also use coconut oil or pretty much any kind of oil for this step if you don’t have cooking spray.Step 2: Add In Ingredients
You read that correctly. Step 2 is simple…add ALL ingredients into your slow cooker and mix. In addition to steel cut oats and almond milk, this recipe calls for vanilla bean paste, cinnamon, and maple syrup. It’s what gives this crockpot steel cut oatmeal its delicious flavor.Step 3: Cook
Turn your slow cooker to high and cook for 4 hours OR low and cook for 8 hours. If possible, I highly recommend giving your steel cut oatmeal a stir every once in a while to prevent sticking. If you’re cooking overnight, don’t fret! You should be fine.More Steel Cut Oatmeal Recipes

Do I throw the whole vanilla bean in there or do I have to cut it?
Can you freeze daily portions of the Crock Pot oatmeal? I have vacuum freezer bags. Thank you :~)
You absolutely can! I’ve never personally tried it with this recipe, but I know you can freeze steel cut oats.
Could you put all the ingredients in the crockpot and put in fridge until ready to make? I’m having brunch at 10:30 AM and want to cook this on low. So I would get up at 2:30 AM and plug in at that time?
You could do that! It’s always tricky when you’re trying to time a crock-pot meal perfectly for guests! Hope it went well!
My family like this yummy food. Thanks
I made this last night for today’s breakfast. I put crumbled bacon on top. It was great!
I didn’t put the whole vanilla bean in it but opened it up to use the inside of it. I think it might be even better with more vanilla but it really was awesome!
Yum yum and yum!
I made this for the first time yesterday! This oatmeal is my best friend! Perfect texture! I get really sick if I eat dairy or refined/added sugar. And let’s be honest, you need brown sugar to make oatmeal taste good. I can eat organic maple sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Then, I add walnuts and bananas and I am in heaven!!!
Also, I cut the recipe in half and it worked fine. Do you think it would work out okay if I cut the recipe in 4? I only cook for one and I prefer the oatmeal to be as fresh as possible. 4 servings would be great, because I actually eat it for breakfast lunch.
And Serin, I use my 2 quart crock pot. ๐
Thanks for the recipe!!!
You can totally cut it in 4! Whatever you prefer ๐ I am so glad you loved this recipe. Isn’t it SO EASY?!
What size crockpot do you cook this in? I have 2 and I’m not sure which would be best. Thanks!
***HELP! I am making this recipe for my MOPS group that meets at 9 am! **
I doubled the recipe. I am exhausted, with my 3 month old on my chest in his carrier . It’s taken me 30 minutes to do these simple conversions and substitute a little bit of water for the some almond milk (I totally winged this).
The question: it looks like too much liquid and not enough oats?!! I put 3 coups oats, 12 cups almond milk/water (just a bit) and doubled the other ingredients. I will let this cook for 8 hours. HELP!! I will try to stir it as much as possible, but I cosleep and nurse my 3 month old. Here’s to hoping I don’t burn it. I may just make this on my nightstand so I can keep my son asleep! Bahahaha! ?
Wahhhhh! Yes with steel cut oats, the ratio is 1 cup oats to 4 cups water. I’ve never personally doubled or tripled the recipe, but I hope it worked out for you! If all else fails, you can throw it on the stove top and let it simmer in the morning! KEEP ME POSTED!
It worked out perfectly! Stirring next to me while night nursing was the best idea I’ve had in a long time! The MOPS mamas loved it! I am actually standing over a new batch as we speak. This time I had my husband get up and stir it at 3:30 am because I was trapped with thr baby and didn’t want to wake him ๐ way to go, husband. Anyway, thanks to your enthusiasm about steel cut oatmeal, it’s now my breakfast staple. I will be trying other varieties soon, but I’m loving the cinnamon maple ๐ I just want Jr to thicken up a lot before I eat it. After 9 hours, why is it not very thick and less mushy? Hurry up, oatmeal, I’m hungry!!!!!!!
AHHHH! I love love loved this comment! Hope your little is doing well. If you’re really liking steel cut oatmeal you should check out this recipe from The Healthy Maven: Peaches and Cream Steel Cut Oats (http://www.thehealthymaven.com/2015/08/slow-cooker-peaches-and-cream-steel-cut-oatmeal.html) SO GOOD! She made them for me the last time I visited her in Toronto.
I bet you already knew this, but that oatmeal is going to help keep your production up for that wee one of yours! Yay BF mommy! ?
I just made this over night. It burned to the sides of the crockpot. haven’t tried it yet. It’s a dark brown color???
Instead of putting the oats directly in the crockpot I put them in a bowl and put the bowl in the crockpot and then put water around the bowl. Comes out perfect and no big crockpot to clean.
What type of bowl?
if I triple this recipe, would the cook time still be the same?
Thanks.,
Hey Anne! Do you have a crock-pot big enough for 3 servings? I would say the cook time should be the same, but that it might not fit in a standard crock-pot!
