What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona coffee is a delicious coffee drink (or coffee whip) that is made of equal parts:

  • instant coffee
  • sugar
  • water

All you need to do is whip that up until the mixture is nice and fluffy!

dalgona coffee at a glance

  • The consistency of dalgona coffee is more of a foam whip.
  • You generally serve dalgona coffee over a base liquid.
  • When you use equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and water it tends to be more bitter than sweet.

Is dalgona coffee served hot or cold?

That actual dalgona coffee itself after it is whisked together into a delicious foam is served cold. It’s your choice to serve it over steamed milk or iced milk!

What You Need for Pumpkin Spice Dalgona Coffee

Instant Coffee

The Instant Coffee in dalgona coffee is what will determine how strong, bitter, cafinatied, and flavorful your dalgona coffee is. You can use a basic instant coffee or you can use an espresso for a stronger dalgona coffee.

Guess what? You can also use mushroom coffee or decaf instant coffee if you want the coffee flavor, but none of the caffeine! Check out our favorite instant coffee options below.

Sugar

You have to use a granulated sugar when making dalgona coffee, but you have choices when it comes to that, too! We generally use brown sugar, but feel free to use any of the sugars below, too.

  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Coconut sugar
  • Sugar in the Raw

Water

Water is the liquid you use to bind everything together for dalgona coffee! Keep it easy and use water!

Add-Ins

You can add so many things to your dalgona coffee to change up the flavor! This pumpkin spice variation calls for pumpkin pie spice and unsweetened pumpkin puree.

Base Liquid

Think of your dalgona coffee as a “latte” you are going to use it as the whip topping to a coffee drink.

We like to sweeten the base liquid to balance out the bitterness of the dalgona coffee with some sweetness. We used almond milk and maple syrup as our base layer, but feel free to use whatever milk and sweetener you would like!

You can also use a protein drink like Corepower vanilla — it’s absolutely delicious!

Sweeten things up

If you like things a bit more sweet rather than savory, feel free to add in more sugar! A tablespoon more will not throw off the whip consistency!

How do you whip dalgona coffee?

We highly recommend using a hand mixer or milk frother for dalgona coffee since it does take a bit of time to get it nice and frothy. However, you can use a hand whisk, too.

You will just have to vigorously hand whisk the dalgona coffee for 8-10 minutes, which may give you a serious hand cramp.

Add some protein!

We recently tried this pumpkin dalgona coffee on top of a Vanilla Fairlife Corepower Protein Shake and it was absolutely divine.

Really yummy! It just took me more like 10 minutes to get the right consistency. I put mine over 1/2 almond milk 1/2 hot coffee and it was perfect for this chilly morning in MN!
