HIIT Treadmill Blast

Holy Crap.For some reason, I got extremely curious about what I as doing at this time last year and decided to take a look back in FFF history. Exactly one year ago I posted a workout. I ran 4 miles in about 33 minutes. That’s about an 8 minute and 15 second minute mile, consecutive for 4 miles.

I don’t think I’ve run under a 9:30 minute mile for four miles straight, let alone a 9:00 minute mile, let alone 8:30 minute mile, in the past 5-6 months. It’s not that I’ve gone on a fitness hiatus or stopped working out, rather I’ve needed the time to adjust to the changes I’ve made in my life over the past few months.

Last year at this time, I was just starting my senior year at the University of Minnesota…taking 12 credits, with a part time job, an internship, and volunteering 4-6 hours/week. I was also extremely active in my University Community and participated in multiple committees in relation to Student Activities, Leadership, and Student Government. On top of all of this, I was a little crazy about my workouts.

Even though my workouts only lasted around 45 minutes, I made sure to hit it and to hit it hard…every day. If that meant running 4 miles in 33 minutes because that’s all the time I had, I did it. If that meant I had to get up at 6AM to run before class, I did it.

Today- life’s not like that.

(I take that back – I’m a morning worker outer- but I justify it with a 9:30PM bedtime!)

I think I have to credit a little bit of the (good) changes I’ve made in my life to Blake. Ever since I met Blake (actually a year ago this week), I’ve really learned to just slow down. I don’t have to get up at 7:30AM on a Saturday so I can get to the gym so I can do 10,000 other things that day.

There’s always tomorrow because tomorrow’s not going anywhere.

Blake is the type of person who puts all of his energy into what he is doing in the present moment. If something important is going on at work- he focuses on work. If he has school after work- he can let work go for those three hours to be present in school. If he has a volunteer event on a Wednesday- he’s able to manage his time at work, so that he can really be present on site for Habitat Humanity.

I look at Blake and think to myself that I could never have a high stress job like him. He works for Target in Property Development. He is something called a strategic sourcing leader, where he supports construction, Target Canada, and distribution. Blake loves what he does, but he also does a lot of things OTHER than work.

Anyways, what I’m trying to say is Blake has taught me how to balance. How to do EVERYTHING you want to do, but through balance.

Today- I have a full time job, I have an amazing boyfriend, close friends, and a freaking awesome blog.

Today- I still workout and eat healthy, but I’m not so damn hard on myself. Do you know how good it feels to be able to focus your energy on what you are doing in the present moment. I used to not be able to sleep at night because my mind was constantly running. Constantly planning the following day or the next or the next. I couldn’t ever turn it off.

Today- that is not the case.

Today- running 4 miles in 33 minutes is not a priority.

Today, I am happy doing all of the things I love and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
