This lemon garlic hummus is made in 3 simple steps and takes only 5 minutes! Just place all the ingredients into a high-speed food processor — seriously, ALL the ingredients. Then, process, serve, and dip to your heart’s content.

Homemade Hummus Recipe – What You Need

  • Garbanzo beans: We drain and rinse these from a can.
  • Olive oil: Olive oil is key for a rich and creamy texture.
  • Unsalted tahini: A staple in hummus. You can find this in most grocery stores nowadays!
  • Sea salt: Just a pinch to bring out the flavors.
  • Garlic: We are using raw garlic to give our hummus a nice bite, but you can use roasted garlic for a more subtle flavor.
  • Lemon juice: Lemon juice adds a nice fresh and tangy element to our hummus.
  • Water: Start with 3 tablespoons, and you may need more later if your hummus is too thick! We’ll get to this.
  • Food processor: A high-speed food processor will provide that smooth and creamy texture.

Can I make hummus without tahini?

Yes, you can make hummus without tahini! Instead of using tahini, try substituting it with a few tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt for a creamy texture. Another option is to use almond butter or cashew butter for a nutty flavor.

Can I make hummus without a food processor?

If you don’t have a food processor, you can still make hummus using a high-speed blender. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender a few times to ensure an even consistency.

Yummy Topping Ideas

Whip up a delicious (but totally optional!) topping for this lemon garlic hummus using only olive oil and chopped fresh basil. Stir together and drizzle it over to fancy it up a bit and add a delicious punch of flavor.

How do you make hummus less gritty?

To make your hummus less gritty, use a high-speed food processor or blender and blend for longer to achieve a smoother consistency. You can also try adding 1 or 2 more tablespoons of water. Once you reach the desired consistency, it should be smooth and easily dippable.

If you really want to go the extra mile, you can take off the skins of your chickpeas before blending. This can be a bit time-consuming, but it will result in an even smoother hummus. Simply pinch the chickpeas between your fingers, and the skins should slide right off.

How to Store

Store this hummus in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep well for up to 5 days.

Ingredients 

  • 1 15- oz. can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup unsalted tahini
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons water*

Optional Herby Topping

  • 1/4 cup EVOO
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped

Instructions 

  • Place all ingredients for your hummus into a high-speed food processor.
  • Then, process on high for 1-2 minutes or until smooth.
  • Option to add 1 or 2 more tablespoons of water depending on the texture of your hummus. It should be smooth and easily dippable.
  • Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.

I absolutely LOVE hummus but recently found out that I have a sensitivity to sesame seeds and would, therefore, have to omit the tahini. Any suggestions for a suitable substitute?

I need to “low salt” this…Salt in tahini, canned beans, and then you add more? Think I will try cooking dry beans (no added salt) and not add sea salt. I noticed the tanini has quite a bit also so maybe enough?

I tried making Hummus a few weeks ago in the vitaMix – didn’t turn out too well – I tend to not use recipes, so it could have just been my measurements. Does it really make a huge difference if you use a VitaMix over a traditional food processor? Anyone try this?

I’ve never used a Vitamix to make hummus, but I hear it’s amazing and actually works better. Why didn’t it work for you? Next time, just add more olive oil until you get the smooth consistency you prefer!
