My Go-To Protein Smoothie

I go in smoothie phases. Anyone else? Pretty much itโ€™s when I drink a smoothie a day for like 2 weeks straight and then I take a break. Then I do it again and REPEAT. This strawberry coconut protein smoothie has been my go-to lately. I almost always have a bag of frozen fruit in the fridge ready to use in smoothies because when in doubt. I picked up a gorgeous bag of organic frozen strawberries from Lunds and Byerlys, which are a little bit more tart than normal strawberries. Yum yum yum! We blended them up with some coconut milk, a hint of honey, and protein powder. Hereโ€™s what else you need for this post workout smoothie.
  • frozen strawberries
  • coconut milk
  • vanilla protein powder
  • honey
  • vanilla extract
  • ground flax seed

Whey + Plant Based Protein Powders

Can we talk about protein powder for a second? I get this question all the time. Iโ€™ve been a Designer Protein fan for years and I use a variety of their products. My all-time time favorite is Designer Protein French Vanilla Whey (which is delicious in this recipe) and you can purchase it online here. Whey protein powder is what I prefer in my smoothies because I love the flavor and silkiness of it, but I also like plant-based, as well! We actually just did a protein powder review and youโ€™ll note that my favorite plant based protein powder is Garden of Life Raw Organic. It bakes really well, but also tastes great in smoothies! Thick vs. Thin Smoothies

When it comes to smoothie consistency, itโ€™s all about preference! Youโ€™ll see above that this coconut protein smoothie is super thick, but thatโ€™s just the way I like it. If you like your smoothies on the thinner side, feel free to add more coconut oil or any other liquid to your smoothie.

Smoothie Substitutions + Additions

Like any smoothie on Fit Foodie Finds, get creative and add what you have! Just because you donโ€™t have coconut milk, doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t make this smoothie. You can totoally swap that out for another non-dairy milk. Check out some suggestions below.

Substitutions

  • protein powder: donโ€™t have protein powder? No problem! Either fully omit the protein powder or add another protein-filled ingredient such as peanut powder.
  • flax seed: while we love ground flax seeds in smoothies, you can also try another ground seed such as chia to get the same health benefits.
  • coconut milk: any other non-dairy milk such as soy or almond milk will work for this recipe!
  • strawberries: swap strawberries for any other kind of berry such as raspberries or blueberries.
  • honey: option to swap out the honey for maple syrup or agave or omit altogether.

Additions

  • nut butter
  • seeds
  • coconut oil
  • nuts
  • fruit

This was absolutely delicious! I subbed coconut milk for oat milk, and threw in a few coconut flakes. So yummy! Tastes likes strawberry cheesecake with a little bit of coconut to me. ๐Ÿ™‚

No picture because my kids slurped it up so quickly but it was a beautiful strawberry ice cream pink color. This has a great flavor and is a good way to get a bit of extra protein into the kids while also getting them to eat some extra fruits. I divided it into two servings per kid (tween and teen) and added it to breakfast! Tasted so delicious I had to make one for myself!

This sounds delicious!! The beautiful MN weather has me craving smoothies so this will be on the menu soon! I love Aloha and Perfect Fit as plant-based protein options. PF is better, but Aloha is at Target so itโ€™s much easier to buy! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oooh this sounds amazing. And itโ€™d be way less pretty but I might occasionally switch it up with chocolate protein powder, because chocolate covered strawberries ๐Ÿ˜€
And for plant-based proteins, I love love love Nuzest. Itโ€™s smooth, not too sweet, and has subtle-but-delicious flavors. I totally appreciate your whey recommendation because I havenโ€™t found one I like! Iโ€™ll for sure check out Designer!

I HAVE TRIED LOTS OF PLANT-BASED PROTEIN POWDERS AND MY FAVORITE IS GARDEN OF LIFE RAW MEAL. ITโ€™S GOT A GREAT NUTRITION PROFILE AND TASTES GOOD TOO! I USUALLY MIX THAT WITH MY VITAL PROTEINS FOR MY MORNING SMOOTHIES.

Looks tasty, and it sounds like you have a fun weekend coming up! I really like hemp protein (itโ€™s not quite as smooth, but the earthiness really reminds me of chocolate so I usually just add some cocoa powder!), and Iโ€™m a fan of Vega if I want something sweeter ๐Ÿ™‚
