Easy Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala
Say hello to this delicious Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala. We have a few great tikka recipes on Fit Foodie Finds (ahem, Chicken Tikka Masala Casserole and Meal Prep Cauliflower Tikka Masala), but we wanted to add a truly traditional tikka masala to the mix, and even better that this deliciousness can be made completely in the slow cooker.
This slow cooker chicken tikka masala is a simple combination of chicken breast, red potatoes and onions, but the sauce is the real star of the show.
Yummy Sauce Ingredients
- full-fat coconut milk
- tomato sauce
- garam masala
- ground cumin
- ground turmeric
- garlic powder
- ground ginger
- a pinch of salt
This delicious combination cooks down to be the most savory and flavorful tikka sauce — and the perfect consistency to boot!
Feel free to serve this delicious slow cooker chicken tikka masala with your preferred grain or wrapped up in a lettuce wrap for a low carb option. The choice is yours!
Chicken Tikka Masala Crockpot is the BEST
You can’t go wrong with chicken in the slow cooker. Amiright!? It’s just such a versatile source of protein that can evenly cook on high or low when submerged in a sauce, broth or other liquid.
Not to mention, I love that this slow cooker chicken tikka masala recipe doesn’t require me to touch and cut raw chicken multiple times and dirty multiple dishes in the prepping process.
By placing the whole raw chicken breasts in the tikka sauce to cook in your slow cooker, you can also choose how you’d like to serve the chicken once it’s done — dicing the chicken works great for this tikka, but if you prefer shredded chicken chunks, that absolutely works as well.

There are so many different grains that pair well with Chicken Tikka! Here are our top recommendations:
- White Rice
- Cauliflower Rice
Let Slow Cooker Tikka Masala cool completely. Then, transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
Freeze for Later
This crockpot chicken recipe is a serious winner because you can actually prep everything and freeze before cooking for an easy-access dinner.

Tips & Notes
- Make sure you cut your potatoes to 1-inch squares so that they are done cooking when your chicken is.
If I make this again, I will be sure to peel the potatoes and cut them smaller. I loved the flavor but too much potato for me.
Does it have to be coconut milk? I have all the other ingredients. Can I use 2% cows’ milk?
Hi Hilary, The coconut milk is pretty crucial to the flavor of this dish, so we don’t recommend substituting cows’ milk!
Can I cook this in an instant pot? Thanks!
Is the serving size 1 cup?
Can you confirm please
The taste is great!!! …. but my chicken turned out pretty dry. I set it on high for about 3.5 hours. I am fairly new to cooking, did I simply cook it too long?
Once frozen how long does it keep? And how do you defrost and reheat?
Hey Roxy! We have an entire guide on how to do this HERE.
Take out the potatoes and this is idea for a low carb, low calorie meal!
Will reduced-fat coconut milk work just as well?
Yes! You can use that for sure!
One of the easiest slow cooker meals I’ve made, yet one of the most flavor packed and delicious! Perfect for meal prepping for the week, will definitely be making again.
Glad you loved this Matty!!!
Yum-our favorite freezer meal so far! We subbed a cumin/turmeric mix (google it) for the garam masala and added spinach at the end. We served it with lentils and will probably add those the next time
This is a really delicious healthy recipe. It has quickly become a staple in our home! Thank you for giving us something hearty and healthy to have for dinner throughout the week.
YAY! We have another Tikka recipe coming in January 😀

If I want to make this to freeze, do I make it and then freeze it. Or do I put all the raw ingredients in a freezer bag and freeze it/
This looks great! Can it be made in the instant pot?
This was so great and so easy! I’ve tried other chicken tikka masala crockpot recipes before and they were much more involved and not nearly this tasty. Thanks for another great dinner to add in to my rotation!
YAY! Glad you loved it <3
Yummy. I just made this. I added red bell pepper in place of potatoes. I added a little honey at the end. The recipe makes a lot of sauce. Next time I might use 2 pounds of chicken. Love it over basmati rice.
