Wondering How to Freeze Avocados? In this post, we’ll give you an easy tutorial for freezing avocados. Plus, we’re sharing what you can do once you thaw your frozen avocados!
Our Go-To Smoothie Hack!
Freezing avocados to use later in smoothies is one of our go-to smoothie hacks! Not only do you get the creamy texture of avocados in your smoothies this way, you also reap all the nutritional benefits that superfood avocados contain.
And bonus! You can use sliced avocados that have been frozen in more than JUST smoothies. We’ll walk you through a few of our fave ways below ๐
Why Freeze Avocados?
There are many reasons to freeze avocados to have on hand for later. Some of our favorites include:
Too Many Avocados on Hand: Buy too many avocados? Or have your ‘cados ALL turn ripe at once? Freeze them before they go bad!
Easy Smoothie Making: We LOVE “hiding” avocados in smoothies! Not only do they add a super creamy texture to your smoothies, they also pack a seriously nutritious punch.
For Blending in Recipes: If you’re making dips or dressings that contain avocados, freezing a few as slices like these and then thawing before blending up into your recipe is oh so easy and meal-prep friendly.
How to Freeze Avocados Step-by-Step
Freezing avocado is as easy as 1-2-3. We’ll walk ya through it:
Prep for Freezing
Place parchment paper onto a large plate or small baking sheet, and set aside. You’ll need this for your avocado slices!
Slice Avocado
Half your avocados and remove the pits and the skin, and then slice avocados into thin slices and place directly onto the parchment paper.
Freeze Avocado Slices
Freeze for 20-30 minutes or until frozen solid to the touch.
Once your avocado slices are completely frozen, remove from the freezer. Use it right away in a smoothie or recipe. Otherwise, place the slices in a freezer-safe bag or container and return it to the freezer for later use.
Your frozen avocado will last up to 3 months in the freezer.
How to Use Frozen Avocados
Frozen avocado can be super versatile! We love using these beautiful green slices in everything from smoothies to guac to dressings and dips. Plus, you’ll never have to worry if your fresh avocado has gone bad again when you have frozen avocado on hand ๐
In Smoothies:
We love using frozen avocados in smoothies because gives smoothies a super creamy texture while also packing tons of great nutrients. Plus, when you put frozen avocado in smoothies, it helps keep the smoothie nice and cold without using ice. Double win!

In Guacamole:
Once your frozen avocado is thawed, it’s perfect to use in guacamole! Simply mash according to your guac recipe of choice (you’ll LOVE our mango guacamole and classic homemade guac recipe).
In Dressings & Dips:
Because many dips and dressings use a food processor or blender to puree the avocado, it’s also a great use for your frozen ‘cado slices. You’ll love our avocado cilantro lime dressing, as well as our avocado hummus.
How to Thaw Avocados
To thaw frozen avocado slices, simply remove as many as you’d like to use from the freezer bag, and place on a plate at room temperature for 30 minutes, or until the avocado slices are cool, but not frozen to the touch.
When NOT to Use Frozen Avocados
Freezing avocado does slightly change its texture, so we do not recommend using avocado slices that have been frozen in recipes where the avocado is used in a sliced manner. This includes: avocado toast, salads with slices of avocado, etc.
How Long Do Frozen Avocados Last?
If stored in an air-tight container in the freezer, your frozen avocado will last for up to 3 months.
Pro tip: write the date you put your avocado slices into the freezer on the bag or container you’re using so you know how long you have to use them.
