Homemade Hummus Recipe – What You Need
- Garbanzo beans: We drain and rinse these from a can.
- Olive oil: Olive oil is key for a rich and creamy texture.
- Unsalted tahini: A staple in hummus. You can find this in most grocery stores nowadays!
- Sea salt: Just a pinch to bring out the flavors.
- Garlic: We are using raw garlic to give our hummus a nice bite, but you can use roasted garlic for a more subtle flavor.
- Lemon juice: Lemon juice adds a nice fresh and tangy element to our hummus.
- Water: Start with 3 tablespoons, and you may need more later if your hummus is too thick! We’ll get to this.
- Food processor: A high-speed food processor will provide that smooth and creamy texture.
Can I make hummus without tahini?
Yes, you can make hummus without tahini! Instead of using tahini, try substituting it with a few tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt for a creamy texture. Another option is to use almond butter or cashew butter for a nutty flavor.
Can I make hummus without a food processor?
If you don’t have a food processor, you can still make hummus using a high-speed blender. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender a few times to ensure an even consistency.
Yummy Topping Ideas
Whip up a delicious (but totally optional!) topping for this lemon garlic hummus using only olive oil and chopped fresh basil. Stir together and drizzle it over to fancy it up a bit and add a delicious punch of flavor.
Some other tasty topping ideas include:
- Roasted garlic cloves
- Chopped olives
- Crumbled feta cheese
- Sliced cherry tomatoes
- Toasted pine nuts
- Sprinkled paprika
How do you make hummus less gritty?
To make your hummus less gritty, use a high-speed food processor or blender and blend for longer to achieve a smoother consistency. You can also try adding 1 or 2 more tablespoons of water. Once you reach the desired consistency, it should be smooth and easily dippable.
If you really want to go the extra mile, you can take off the skins of your chickpeas before blending. This can be a bit time-consuming, but it will result in an even smoother hummus. Simply pinch the chickpeas between your fingers, and the skins should slide right off.
How to Store
Store this hummus in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep well for up to 5 days.
How to Enjoy Your Simple Hummus Recipe
Dip: Enjoy it as a dip with pita chips, crackers, sliced veggies, or cheese.
Sauce: Hummus is a perfect base for a pasta sauce. Simply fold it into your pasta as a healthy alternative to a creamy sauce.
Dollop: Go ahead and dollop this lemon garlic hummus on top of a Buddha Bowl or Grain Bowl. The flavor will jazz up any bowl situation you’re eating!
Spread: Forget the mayo and mustard, and use hummus as a condiment for your next sandwich! We love using it as a sandwich or wrap spread. It gives any sammie amazing flavor and texture.

First time doing this and something is not clear to me, the garbanzo beans are fresh and then blended, or do I have to cook them in anyway before? A friend told me you have to put them in boiling water for 3 hours before taking them to the blender. Someone?
Hi Lydia! I used canned garbanzo beans, so they were already cooked! So sorry for the confusion!
I’m an all day snacker. My “meals” are super small because of this AND I often have a bedtime snack. Dave’s definitely more a 3 square meals guy but he’s getting more into snacking and not starving.
Question: what recipe plugin do you use?? I like the “rate this recipe” thing that shows up below comments!
ahhh I tried the 3 square meal things and would just get hungry a the same times. NowSnack snack snack.
This needs to be fedex’d. Please please. ๐
HUMMUS OH YEAH
This looks incredible!!
Me likey. I envision this going on a wrap soon. Or just spooned into my mouth like most dips I make. Heh.
Yes to all of the above.
I eat two small meals a day and have a snack in between.
This hummus looks so good and so easy! I might have to make it for my girls night tonight. I am definitely a grazer, though. I eat constantly!
I’m definitely a three meals a day kind of gal. But I love hummus regardless!
I prefer eating fewer bigger meals but I caught myself having several smaller meals the past few days. I think it depends on my schedule and desire to cook, hehe. If I don’t feel much like cooking, I have smaller snack meals. Love hummus, I have to make it again some time!
