Ingredients for Taco Soup
My guess is that many of you already have many of these ingredients in your pantry or in the refrigerator right now! If not, consider adding everything on this list to your next grocery list so you have everything you need for this soup on hand.
- Olive oil- just a little oil to sauté a few ingredients. Avocado oil would work, too.
- White onion– the base of many soups is onion and garlic. Don’t skip the onion.
- Ground turkey– we kept this taco soup a little leaner and used ground turkey for our protein. Feel free to use ground beef or pork instead of a richer taco soup.
- Salt– enhance all of the flavors in this soup with salt. Remember to salt in layers and keep
- Taco seasoning– you can use any taco seasoning that you would like. We prefer to use a homemade taco seasoning, but store bought would do just fine. Just remember that store bought taco seasoning tends to have more salt.
- Garlic– the goodness that garlic adds to this soup is amazing, don’t forget it.
- Black beans– drain a can of black beans or use soaked black beans that you’ve prepared yourself.
- Green chiles– green chiles add quite a bit of flavor to this taco soup. If you want a spicer soup, use canned jalapeños instead.
- Frozen corn– we like to use frozen corn instead of canned corn. It is less likely to get soggy than canned corn.
- Diced tomatoes– the tomato base of this soup comes from diced tomatoes. The chunks of tomatoes adds the perfect tomato texture to the soup.
- Tomato paste– to thicken the taco soup just a bit, we used tomato paste.
- Apple cider vinegar– we like to brighten up some of our soup recipes using apple cider vinegar. If you’re out of apple cider vinegar, white vinegar will work.
- Franks hot sauce– another way to spice up this soup is with a little hot sauce.
- Chicken broth– any broth will do when it comes to the base for this soup. Using beef broth will give you a richer and more flavorful soup.
- Cilantro– you add the cilantro right before serving to add fresh and bright flavor.

How to Make Taco Soup
One thing I love about this soup is that it is ready in 30-minutes but also has amazing flavor. This truly is a no fuss soup.
- Sauté Ingredients. Heat a large dutch oven over medium/high heat and sauté onion, garlic, taco meat in a large dutch oven.
- Add the flavor. Add the taco seasoning to the pot and mix ingredients together until combined.
- Simmer that soup. Add the rest of your ingredients and let the soup simmer for 20 minutes.
- Top and enjoy. After the soup has simmered it is ready to eat. Top your taco soup with your favorite toppins like sour cream, cilantro, fresh lime juice, some crunchy chips, and enjoy!
here’s a tip!
Be sure to use a large enough skillet with a top for this recipe. A Dutch oven also works well.
