Bring on all of the chai-flavored recipes this fall! Whether you are a spicy chai tea person, a sweet chai person, or a dirty chai tea latte kind of human, this homemade chai spice mix is delicious and totally customizable.

Add these chai spices to your cabinet for easy access to chai spices all year round. You can add this mix to a protein, overnight oats, or your favorite sweet snack for a chai spice twist!

What is in chai spice?

How much chai spice should I use in chai tea?

Per 1 cup of water/milk, we recommend using 1 teaspoon of chai spices + 1 black tea bag to make chai tea. Check out our chai tea latte recipe.

What does this chai spice mix taste like?

This chai spice mix is on the spicier side. We like our chai with a bite rather than a sweet spice mix so we added a little extra ground ginger. If you love yourself a sweet chai, try taking out some ginger and adding more cinnamon or even a teaspoon of coconut sugar or brown sugar. Have no shame either way. The taste buds want, what the taste buds want. DO YOU FEEL ME?

We love mixing up our own chai spices so that we have chai spice ready in the pantry whenever we’re craving a chai tea latte or one of our favorite Fit Foodie Finds chai recipes. Yes, we have a bunch!  Check them out.

Be careful with nutmeg! This recipe may have a bit too much – if someone were to go wild, make something using the whole recipe, and eat the whole thing, they could get nutmeg poisoning. I made eggnog with a whole nutmug (~5g – approx 2 tsp, same amount as in the recipe) that my wife and I split and she woke up in the middle of the night with tachycardia, irregular heartbeat, and an impending sense of doom (she was sure she was going to die), all of which are symptoms. Now, 2.5 grams shouldn’t have done that (it should take the full 5 at least) but you never know if you’ll be extra sensitive to it, plus she had been cooking with nutmeg quite a bit that week and it seems like it can build up in your system. I was unaffected but she felt terrible for a week. It could have been worse – you can require hospitalization or even die.

It was okay; but why add allspice instead of just more cinnamon, nutmeg and clove? Seems redundant since that’s all allspice is. It’s also missing the black pepper.

Hi Bree,
Allspice is actually a spice all it’s own. It looks like black pepper as it’s whole form. It’s a common misconception, one I also thought until I happened across it. It adds more dimension to the chai mix.

This was just perfect! I omitted the tea bags cuz I’m doing a caffeine free month and just love this spice blend. Just what I was looking for. Thank you. <3

I would say less cardamom in the recipe as that’s all I could taste in the blend.

Really lovely and warming – I would use less ginger next time, but it’s all down to personal taste!! I used whole cow’s milk instead and it was lovely and creamy!
