We were having a night in making fajitas and I pulled out a batch of this homemade fajita seasoning to season our chicken and my husband was astonished that I wasn’t using a store-bought packet. I told him I have only ever used this homemade fajita seasoning and he just couldn’t believe that we’d always used a Fit Foodie recipe. 😏LOL.
Fajitas of any kind are a staple in my household. What makes our steak fajitas and chicken fajitas truly the best dinners is our homemade fajita seasoning. No weird fillers or additives, just 6 basic spices you already have.
Our blend is mild in spice level, but can easily be modified if you like it spicy. You can use it on any protein (including beef, seafood, chicken, etc.), on fajita veggies, on beans, and even as an all-purpose seasoning for really anything (speaking from experience).
What is in fajita seasoning?
Below is the spice combination you need for homemade fajita seasoning!
- chili powder
- ground cumin
- garlic powder
- paprika
- salt
- pepper
Make it spicy
We mentioned that this spice blend is mild in flavor. If you like it spicy, feel free to add 1/2 teaspoon more paprika or 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne powder.
How much fajita seasoning should I use?
Per pound of meat, we recommend using 3 to 4 teaspoons of seasoning. A good rule of thumb is to start small and continue adding to taste.
How to Store Fajita Seasoning
We recommend storing your homemade spice mix in an airtight container and storing it in a cool, dark, and dry place for up to 6 months.

How to Use this Fajita Seasoning Recipe
While the most classic way to use fajita seasoning is to season meat and veggies in fajitas, you can also use it in so many other ways
Flavor soup: use this seasoning to give your chili or taco soup some extra flavor!
Meat rub: you can use this fajita mix as a spice rub for any kind of meat such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp. Give your meat a nice pat down and let sit for about 20 minutes before cooking your preferred method.
Roasted veggies: if you’re a roasted veggie girl like me, you’d die with the flavor this seasoning gives your veggies. Follow our tutorial for how to roast sweet potatoes, but sprinkle on this spice mix instead!
Turn it into a marinade: combine a few teaspoons of seasoning with some olive oil and lime juice and you’ve got yourself a fajita marinade! Try our steak fajita marinade.
Homemade Fajita Seasoning Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoons salt*
- 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a small jar or airtight container.
- Mix the spices togehter and seal.
- Store in a cool, dark place for up to 3-5 months.
Tips & Notes
- Salt: this recipe is made with less salt than other fajita seasonings. Feel free to add more to taste.

Easy and delicious! I throw about 3tbs in after the chicken is cooked, with the peppers and onion and about ยผc of water and simmer until veggies are done. I like my fajitas a little wet. I’ve used my extra seasoning in other Mexican dishes as a marinade. It’s good to have on hand. I ran out of garlic powder once and just subbed garlic salt and omitted the other salt and it was great.
